INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
The Jury:
Michael Madsen (president), Chiara Griziotti, Clive Oppenheimer, Anna de Manincor, Menotti.
TO STAY ALIVE: A METHOD by Arno Hagers, Erik Lieshout e Reinier van Brummelen
Motivation: «For his illumination of the Secret of Life: life is perhaps never present in itself, but only as a friction between alienation and inspiration, which may find expression in poetry, music, or the greatest tinkling and bustling piece of art tucked away in the basement of the only fictitious character in the film, incarnated by Houellebecq himself. Ironically, the masterpiece resides only in our imagination, thus transforming the audience into world creators. Thank you for this new manifesto - introducing a world full of vivid images, pain, dignity and the generosity of real characters. Shared with a film audience, it is a world that reaches beyond our individual capacities to stay alive. »
Qurban Ali Afzali one of the main characters of NOTHINGWOOD by Sonia Kronlund
Motivation: «We recognise Qurban Ali Afzali not only as a character in Nothingwood, but for his extraordinary performance as an actor (an actress, actually) in the role of a mother: a true piece of art that lifts the movie of the striking Afghan director Selim Shaheen from a local audience to the heights of the “cinema di poesia” imagined by Pier Paolo Pasolini. Qurban Ali Afzali reminds us of the singularity and the diversity of each and every human being and belongs to the international community of performing arts and cinema. Thank you to director Sonia Kronlund for introducing us to the world of contemporary Afghan cinema and for giving voice to the life tales of its creators and protagonists. »
SPETTACOLO by Jeff Malmberg, Chris Shellen
Motivation: «For sharing the post-war "auto-drama" tradition of Montichiello (Tuscany), whose annual play gives voice to the collective conscience and contemporary concerns of its small community. This is a unique creative process from the ground up of public and participatory art, striving to stay alive to confront the social, demographic and economic transformations of our world.
È un processo creativo unico di arte pubblica e partecipativa, dal basso, che combatte per la propria esistenza in un mondo contemporaneo, percorso da profonde trasformazioni demografiche, economiche e sociali.»

OLTREMARE by Loredana Bianconi
Motivation: «A letter found in a drawer becomes the beginning of a journey into the history of Italian colonization in Africa. A unique, sophisticated and moving film, which boldly chooses to entrust the telling of the story to archival images, along with a skillful audio commentary, plunging the spectator into a collective memory that must be reclaimed. »
IL PRINCIPE DI OSTIA BRONX by Raffaele Passerini
Motivation: «Coming from the stage that is Capocotta beach, an original film that depicts, through an intimate approach, a love story on the margins, two characters searching for happiness in a world that will not recognize them. A film that manages to go beyond stereotypes, evoking the spectator’s empathy and giving us a passionate insight into our modern world. »
CINEMA GRATTACIELO by Marco Bertozzi
Motivation: «For the search into an innovative and visionary narrative and the strong cinematographic choice of giving a voice and body to a skyscraper’s biography, with its experiences, its residents, its dreams, its fantasies. »
PREMIO UCCA - L’ITALIA CHE NON SI VEDE
The Jury: Roberto Roversi, Antonio Borrelli, Andrea Contu.
THE HATE DESTROYER by Vincenzo Caruso
Motivation: «For managing to tell, through a personal and troubled portrait of a woman who battles through small daily actions against neo-Naziism, the current political crisis in European society, urging a timely reflection on the tools needed for combining the sacred principle of freedom of expression with a necessary containment of totalitarian ideologies and discrimination. »
PREMIO HERA “NUOVI TALENTI”
The Jury: Roger Ross Williams (president), Daniele Orazi, Teemu Nikki.
STRANGER IN PARADISE by Guido Hendrikx
Motivation: «A film that explores the complexities of an important and timely issue in Europe. A story that takes us into a room full of opinions that force the audience to rethink their values. The Jury was impressed by a break-out performance of Valentijn Dhaentens.»
NOTHINGWOOD by Sonia Kronlund
Motivation: «A film that surprises you in many ways and that opens a door to a country we thought we knew. The film tells us a story about an Afghan superstar who shows us that we all need films to give us hope. »
